This series of articles will offer my nearly eight decades of California impressions and experience, gained as a 1949 immigrant from Alabama. My main motivation is to dispel the widely held impression, held by those East of the Sierra Nevada, that California is all palm-bordered beaches where beautiful people tan, play volleyball and surf. My title, taken from the California state flag, was chosen because California with its many distinct climate zones and widely varying cultures and geography, is more like a country than a state.
